Kyoshi is from Avatar the Last Airbender, and the main character of two of the Avatar books. Kyoshi was constructed in about 500 hours, and includes techniques such as sashiko stitching (a form of hand embroidery), leatherworking, lots of weathering, and historical Japanese garment construction techniques. I debuted an initial version of this cosplay at Nan Desu Kan 2025, where I won a judge's award. I iterated on this cosplay and then entered it in the Fan Expo Denver 2026 cosplay contest and won Best in Show!Â
In 2027, I will be heading to Megacon to represent the Rocky Mountain region in international finals!
The emphasis on this cosplay is historical inspiration. Kyoshi is based on the "age of the samurai", from the Heian to the Edo periods. This cosplay contains:
80+ feet of self-made bias tape
650+ feet of sashiko stitching
600+ hand-cut leather hexagons, punched with 3600+ holes, and 12,000+ woven chains for chainmail
self-made gloves with gussets
self-made leather tabi (shoes) and waraji (sandals)
